The Secrets of Madaket Ditch – a Tour of One of Nantucket’s Only True Estuaries

  • Linda Loring Nature Foundation 110 Eel Point Road Nantucket, MA, 02554 (map)

Joins us as we explore the historic connection between Madaket Harbor and Long Pond. Did you know the Madaket Ditch was dug by hand almost 400 years ago? How, why, and by whom?

Dr. Sarah Bois of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation will lead a tour of Long Pond and the Madaket ditch to Madaket harbor on the western end of the island. We will take participants through this important estuary from the North Head of Long Pond to Hither Creek (leading to Madaket Harbor) with stops along the way. We will learn about the unique cultural and physical history of this area; the ecological and biological importance of the estuary, what research is being conducted in and around the area, and see some of the unique biodiversity of this important, resilient habitat.

Participants will meet at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (110 Eel Point Road) and we will drive participants (via LLNF van) to each stop. We’re excited to have you join us as we explore one of Nantucket’s only true estuaries with a particularly unique history.

Free to attend.
