Ecologist in Training: Water Quality Monitoring at the North Head of Long Pond

In this workshop, we will explore the techniques for monitoring water quality, learn about the history of sampling on the North Head of Long Pond, and examine how baseline data informs us about changes or threats to the environment. Join LLNF staff to sample water quality at our field sites around the North Head of Long Pond and talk about how climate change and sea level rise may impact future water quality and flow.

The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has been collecting data on water quality since 2021 across a suite of common parameters to document baseline conditions. This hands-on workshop will highlight the LLNF water quality monitoring project, what we know so far, and demonstrate the skills and tools used in this type of research and monitoring.

In this workshop, we will:

  • Use common tools for water quality monitoring including refractometers, Secchi disks, and a YSI probe to record water chemistry data;

  • Learn about Harmful Algal Blooms and collect a water sample to evaluate if they are present,

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the ecology of the North Head of Long Pond and learn how that may change as sea level rise and saltwater flow into the pond accelerates;

  • Contribute directly to the LLNF water quality monitoring and Harmful Algal Blooms projects.

No previous knowledge is required.

This is an off-trail workshop experience occurring in wetlands and at the pond edge. This program offers hands-on participation, but is not a requirement. Attendees can participate at their own comfort level. An email with details on proper attire and other information related to this workshop will be emailed to all registered participants.
