Ecologist in Training: Phenology Basics with Dr. Sarah Bois

Phenology Basics with Dr. Sarah Bois; Methods for various plants species, birds, and insect monitoring using tools from the National Phenology Network.

In this workshop, we will explore the techniques for monitoring plant phenology, learn about the history of a long-term LLNF research project, and examine how climate can affect some of our common, native species. What is phenology? It’s the study of nature’s timing. Join LLNF staff to record information from multiple plants and insects across the LLNF property. We’ll discuss how climate change, namely changes in temperature and precipitation, can affect when some of our plants and insects bloom, fruit, grow, and hatch.

The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has been collecting data on native shrub phenology since 2014 using protocols from the National Phenology Network (NPN). In 2024, LLNF was recognized as Phenology Champions by NPN for this work. This hands-on workshop will highlight the LLNF phenology project, what we know so far, and demonstrate the skills and tools used in this type of research and monitoring.

In this workshop, we will:

  • Use common methods for making phenological observations on wild plants, birds, and insects;

  • Learn about the native shrub phenology research at LLNF, how we collect climatic data on-site, and how we contribute to the National Phenology Network;

  • Learn about how climate change can affect the timing of natural events and what we are already experiencing on Nantucket;

  • Contribute directly to the LLNF phenology projects.

No previous knowledge is required.

 This is a partially off-trail workshop experience. This is a hands-on workshop, but participation is not a requirement for participation. Attendees can participate at their own comfort level. An email with details on proper attire and other information related to this workshop will be emailed to all registered participants.
