In this workshop, we will explore the techniques for monitoring avian nest boxes, examine how tracking populations can help us conserve species, and learn about the threats that Tree Swallows face. Join LLNF staff to help check nest boxes and examine how changes in Tree Swallow nest success and phenology are tied to climate change impacts.

The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has been collecting formal data on our nest boxes since 2020 (and anecdotally before that) to understand Tree Swallow nesting preferences and refine our methods to protect these important species and their required habitats. This hands-on workshop will highlight the LLNF nest box project, what we know so far, and demonstrate the skills and tools used in this type of research and monitoring.

In this workshop we will:

• Learn monitoring skills for avian nest box field work including proper ways to check nest boxes, handle birds, and collect data on active nests;

• Gain in-depth knowledge of bird biology, behavior, and ecology, with a primary focus on Tree Swallows;

• Contribute directly to the LLNF nest box monitoring project.

 No previous knowledge is required. This workshop will occur at the height of Tree Swallow breeding season and LLNF staff will know in advance which boxes contain active nests. 

 This is an off-trail workshop experience. This is a hands-on program but handling a bird or physically touching a nest is not a requirement for participation. Attendees can participate at their own comfort level. An email with details on proper attire and other information related to this workshop will be emailed to all registered participants.
