In this workshop, we will explore the research and techniques used for studying freshwater turtle species and their habitats. Join LLNF Director of Research and Conservation and LLNF staff to learn about freshwater turtle species of Nantucket, their habitat preferences, and conservation efforts to support these populations. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has been collecting data on our turtle species since 2021 in an effort to support these important species and their required habitats. This hands-on workshop will highlight the LLNF turtle project, what we know so far, and demonstrate the skills and tools used in this type of research and monitoring.

In this workshop we will:

• Learn research skills for turtle field work including various trapping methods, proper handling, marking methods, radio telemetry, and data collection on some of Nantucket’s freshwater turtle species;

• Gain in-depth knowledge of turtle biology, behavior, and ecology;

• Contribute directly to the LLNF turtle research project.

 No previous knowledge is required. All turtle captures are conducted for research purposes under the appropriate state permits.

This is an off-trail workshop experience. This is a hands-on workshop, but handling a turtle is not a requirement for participation. Attendees can participate at their own comfort level.
