Ecologist in Training - Aquatic Sampling: Discover the Creatures of North Head of Long Pond

  • Linda Loring Nature Foundation 110 Eel Point Road Nantucket, MA, 02554 (map)

In this workshop we will explore the techniques for sampling aquatic fish, shellfish, and insects. Using methods such as seine netting, fish traps, and dip nets we will collect, photograph, and measure species observed. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has been sampling aquatic species in the North Head of Long Pond since 2021. This hands-on workshop will highlight what we know so far, and demonstrate the skills and tools used in this type of research and monitoring.

In this workshop we will:

  • Use common sampling equipment for aquatic species collection such as seine nets, fish traps, and dip nets to record species abundance and diversity;

  • Gain experience with species sorting, measuring, and cataloguing;

  • Photograph and upload species information to iNaturalist to add to our biodiversity records ,

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the ecology and species present in the North Head of Long Pond;

  • Contribute directly to the LLNF’s aquatic sampling research project.

 No previous knowledge is required.

This is an off-trail workshop experience occurring in wetlands and within the pond. Waders and other appropriate gear will be made available to those interested. This program offers hands-on participation, including the opportunity to sample within the pond, but is not a requirement. Attendees can participate at their own comfort level. An email with details on proper attire and other information related to this workshop will be emailed to all registered participants.
