Current Nature: One Island, Countless Species: Nantucket BioBlitz 2025
Is it possible to identify and collect data on thousands of animal and plant species across Nantucket? Are there even that many living organisms on the island? Where do they all exist?
Just a few hours participating in the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and The Nantucket Land and Water Council’s BioBlitz event at the Creeks, led by Dr. Sarah Bois (LLNF), enlightened me to the variety of living organisms that inhabit the island. This beach and salt marsh habitat held more diversity than I could have ever imagined!
Current Nature: 2024 Nantucket BioBlitz – Making Nature Count
Dog vomit slime mold, harlequin bugs, ghost pipe, searobins, American coot, and hickory tussock moths. What do these things have in common? They were all seen on Nantucket during the 2024 BioBlitz!
The Nantucket BioBlitz just wrapped up it’s fourth year of cataloging every living thing on the island in July. In a two-week period (July 13th – July 26th), volunteers, conservation professionals, students, and other community members canvased the island taking photos of living things (or clues to something alive) and uploading those observations to the iNaturalist app.

‘Tis the season to be outdoors. Beach days, gardening, yard games, and summer camp are in full swing and many of us on Nantucket are spending more time outside these days. Blooming flowers, ripening berries, buzzing insects, and fledgling birds abound this time of year.
