2018 Class Descriptions

Environmental Adventures (age 6-9)

Birding Bootcamp

In this exciting class, students will learn about common bird species found on Nantucket and gain experience with the tools we use for birding, such as binoculars, spotting scopes, field guides, and apps. As a group we will practice identifying birds by sight and sound and will test our skills with an interactive bird walk! We will also examine specimens such as bird nests, feathers, and owl pellets and talk more about bird research.

Insect Investigators

Come learn about bugs! In this class we’ll learn how insects are classified, trap live specimens, and talk about how insects are preserved. Beautiful butterflies, amazing ants, and magnificent mantids, we’ll cover them all! Students will also gain experience with collecting tools and insect identification.

Soil Sleuths

All things dirt! Students will learn about the glacial history of Nantucket, participate in soil tests, and discover the unique ecosystems that grow here on island. We’ll take soil cores, learn how to use soil testing equipment, think more about how soils affect our island, and learn about some of the animals that live in the soil!

Flower Frenzy

This class is about everything plants! Leaves, flowers, and fruits, we’ll learn them all. Students will participate in a nature walk and discover some of the common plants we have at LLNF. We’ll also do plant crafts, learn some wild edible basics, become familiar with phenology (the study of nature’s timing), and read plant stories!

Nature Art & Play

Being outdoors is about having fun! Join us for this class to experience nature through hands-on play. We’ll do creative art projects, play games, tell stories, and undergo team-building challenges designed to teach about science and strengthen our connections to each other and the natural world.

Superhero Science

Batman! Spiderman! Antman! Squirrel Girl! What do all of these cool superheroes have in common? They’re all based on animals! In this class we will learn about each of the creatures that serve as a basis for these characters, analyze animal adaptations, and do cool experiments related to biomimicry! Hopefully we’ll even see some of these animals along our trails.

Eco Engineers

Interested in engineering? Come join us for this exciting class where we will work on hands-on projects using both man-made and natural materials! Each student will be challenged to put their creativity to the test to learn about physics and how engineering projects often replicate solutions from nature.

Sensational Senses

This class is all about using your five senses! Students will touch, smell, hear, see, and taste nature and participate in engaging activities to hone these skills! We will do crafts, walk on our trails, read stories, and play games that engage our senses and connect us more to the natural world.

Science Superfan Club (ages 10-13)

Citizen Science Extravaganza

In this interactive workshop, students will participate in citizen science projects and discover how community members can play a vital role in the scientific process. The class will highlight projects related to precipitation monitoring, plant phenology, invasive species, bird research, and others. As a group we will use apps and collect real data to aid in citizen science research!

Nature Navigators

Love nature, want to learn how to orienteer? Then this class is for you! As a group we will learn orienteering skills, become comfortable with navigation equipment, and have a blast exploring nature! We will also learn about geocaching, participate in an orienteering scavenger hunt, and study some of the plants and animals found at LLNF up close.

Natural History Blitz

This class will teach you to be a nature expert! We will use tools and resources to learn all about different plants and animals, look for and identify them in the field, and even make our own field guide!

Primitive Skills Workshop

All about surviving in the wild! In this workshop you will learn primitive skills such as wild edible gathering, shelter building, rope making, and many others. By the end of the course you’ll be ready to brave the elements and will gain a better respect and understanding of nature.
