LLNF Science Pub With Dr. Sarah Bois, IPSC Co-Chair

  • Saltbox Tavern and Table 7 Macys Lane Nantucket, MA, 02554 United States (map)

Monday, January 14th is the first installment in our 2019 Science Pub series hosted by The Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF). Sarah Bois, PhD, of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and co-Chair of the Nantucket Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC), will give a talk about "Wild Weeds; A conversation about invasive species, planting natives, and our role in stemming the problem."

Non-native invasive plants are a management concern for many conservation groups, land managers, and homeowners on the island. The issues aren't unique to Nantucket, but the specific species and how we manage for them and sometimes tolerate them is particular to our land management goals and island climate. Sarah will discuss the work that the IPSC and other conservation groups are doing to "stem" the tide of invasives. We'll also talk about research highlighting the connection between tick populations and invasive shrubs and the importance of native plantings to local biodiversity. We'll also have copies of the IPSC/NBI pamphlet, “Landscaping with Native Plants on Nantucket”.

Come ready with questions, comments, and thoughts about non-native plants on Nantucket.

This year, Science Pub will be held in the newly renovated Saltbox Tavern and Table at 7 Macys Lane. Food and drink available for purchase. Free admission. Call (508) 325-0873 for questions or more info.

This event was made possible by the generous support of the Nantucket Community Foundation and ReMain Nantucket Fund.
